5 Steps to Kickstart Your Spring Cleaning
Many people are spending more time indoors than usual lately and that can lead to extra clutter around the house. Since lots of us are working from home it’s best to create an organized space to help us stay relaxed.
Uplift your mood and make your environment happier and calmer with our 5 Steps to Kickstart Your Spring Cleaning.
1. Make a Checklist
The first thing you should do is make a checklist of all the rooms and areas that need to be cleaned. This includes the bathroom, bedrooms, kitchen, family room, and more. Note any supplies you’ll need such as a vacuum, mop, surface cleaner, and carpet shampoo. Also make sure to include what needs to be done in each space.
In the bathroom vacuum and wipe the walls and ceilings, wash throw rugs, wash mirrors and windows, spray and soak, and rinse the floor.
In each bedroom vacuum and wipe the walls and ceilings, dust all surfaces, open the windows, wash drapes, linens and sheets, clean window treatments, wash mirrors and inside of windows, and shampoo or steam carpets and rugs.
In the kitchen clean the refrigerator and freezer, degrease cooking appliances, clean window treatments, wash all surfaces, cabinets, and utensils, and sweep, vacuum, and mop the floor.
In the family room dust ceiling fans, bookcases, and shelves. Vacuum and wipe wall and ceilings, clean sofa upholstery, wipe or replace lightbulbs, clean window treatments, clean and dust electronics, sweep out your fireplace, and clean the carpets.
2. Gather Everything You Need
Once you’ve completed your checklist, gather everything you need and get cleaning. Take an inventory before and after in case you need to order more supplies for next time.
Preparation will make you more efficient and save you frustration as you move from room to room.
3. Declutter, Declutter, Declutter
Now that you’ve decided to spend the day tidying up, start by decluttering. Before you begin throwing things out, visualize the way you want your home to look and set concrete goals about the lifestyle you wish to live.
To figure out what should go and what should stay, determine if the item sparks joy. Feel each item and wait for your emotional response using the KonMari Method to make sure you don’t get rid of something truly important to you.
Tidy your clothes, books, papers, miscellaneous items, and then sentimental objects.
4. Time To Do A Deep Clean
Set goals about what you want to get done, in what timeframe, and then get cleaning! In addition to vacuuming and mopping, make sure to cover easily forgotten or hard to reach areas such as between refrigerator coils, ceiling fan blades, inside the washing machine, inside light fixtures, around door frames and molding, and behind the toilet.
Do your best to make the experience as fun as possible by playing some upbeat music or creating child-friendly tasks for your kids and turn it into a game about who can complete their tasks the fastest.
5. Organize And Optimize
The last critical step is to organize and optimize your belongings, which will help your space stay cleaner for longer and keep you happy in it.
Organize by zones while thinking about how you want that area of your home to function. Dividing a room into smaller sections often makes the organization process much simpler and less overwhelming.
For example, you can remove all of the items in your pantry and sort which things need to be thrown out and which can stay. When you put them back, make sure to sort them into categories putting “like” items together.
Optimize by making the things you use the most accessible while reserving higher shelf space or the back of the cupboard for items you use less frequently.
Bars, hooks, baskets, labels, and other organization tools will help you make the most of the space you have and help prevent your home from getting messy in the future.
